Looking for a new house or apartment to rent for the 2015-2016 school year? Here’s some things to consider:
· Find a well-regarded landlord or property management company. Ask other students about their experiences with a particular property management company or landlord. Is there on-site management? Have other students found the property management company to be attentive in responding to issues (e.g. making repairs promptly and thoroughly)? Did they have any problems?
· Shop around. Look at a lot of different possible rentals, and a variety of rentals. Looking at more options increases your chances of finding what you’re looking for.
· Evaluate safety. Does the rental have adequate security (e.g. locks on doors and windows or an alarm system)? Is there enough lighting around the rental and in parking areas?
· Ask about transportation. Will parking be provided? Does it cost extra or require permits? How many spaces are offered? Is there a nearby bus line or other transportation options?
· Ask questions frequently. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! It is important to clarify all expectations and thoroughly understand what you are committing to prior to signing a lease.
· Negotiate lease terms if needed. If you have concerns about terms of a lease agreement or aspects that you don’t agree with, talk with your landlord. Before you sign, it may be possible to negotiate the terms of the lease so that it adequately addresses your own needs. Ask your landlord about this before you sign the lease.
