Bike Safety and Guidelines

Being trampled by a biker or crashing into another rider is one of the last things anyone wants to experience, and so it is important that bikers and pedestrians are constantly aware of their surroundings. About 15% of UO students use bikes as their main mode of transportation to campus. While biking is so common at the UO, many students are unaware/ forget basic safety necessities and guidelines for the avid biking community.

1. Register your bike:All bikes are required to be registered through the Department of Public Safety through the UOPD. If you haven’t done so already, bring your bike in person to campus, to the Department of Parking and Transportation (503.346.5444); registration is free.

2. Be prepared:While it’s easy to forget bike lights, police can give bikers tickets for riding in the dark without them. Bikers are also expected to follow the same laws as cars; a bicycle is a vehicle.

3. Hand signals:
When bicyclist are turning right they should extend their left arm out and position their hand to the sky, creating a ninety degree angle with their elbow. When going left, bikers should point their left arm straight out.

4. Know about the UO Outdoor Program and bike stations on campus:
It’s important to keep your bike in adequate condition. At all campus dorms, there are bike tool stations for students to fill up their tires, adjust seat positions, etc. The UO Outdoor Program is available for students who want hands-on guidance regarding any bike fix. The program also lends out bikes to UO students and runs a paid class on the ins and outs of owning and maintaining a bike called Bike School.

Tips:   · Check and fill your tires every two weeks.
   · Make sure your brake pads aren’t worn and are situated properly on tires.
   · Be aware of your bike chain’s condition.
   · Always lock up your bike with a U-Lock when leaving it unattended.
   · Don’t listen to music too loudly when biking; make sure you can hear traffic/ surroundings.
   · Become familiar with bike paths and roads throughout Eugene/ campus vicinity.
   · A helmet should always be worn when biking, especially on busy streets or unknown areas.
