Tips for Maximizing Your Holiday Break

What am I going to do with all this free time off from school!?

·      New Year’s Resolutions:
Even though these seem cliché, holiday break is a great time to think about setting personal goals for the year ahead. Reflect back on 2013 – what could you have done better? What do you want to work on next year?

·      Summer jobs and internships:
It’s never too early to think about what you want to do this summer! Start to research internships, local jobs, study-abroad programs or volunteering opportunities to do this summer.

·      Networking & information interviews:
Have you thought about your career options recently? Holiday break is a great time to set up in-person and telephone informational interviews with professionals in your industry. Make use of the network in your city, do research on LinkedIn, and set-up phone and Skype interviews to start to build your career network.

·      Spruce up your resume:
The dreaded task of updating – or more daunting yet, creating, a resume is never the first thing on anyone’s to-do list, but this is a great time to get it knocked out. Explore the resources on DuckConnect and begin to mold this development tool so it’ll be ready when you want to apply for jobs later.

·      Catch up with old friends
Sure, your college friends are great, but don’t forget about your friends from home! Catch up with old friends and connections while you still have the chance and free time to do it.

·      Clean out your things at home
Chances are you have a lot of things sitting in your bedroom at home you no longer need. Do a winter cleaning and donate your unneeded clothes and other items to a local charity.

·      Relax!
Enjoy having some time off and recharge before winter term starts.
