Tips to Help Keep Your House
Safe During Your Absence:
Safe During Your Absence:
The holiday break is a time when many students leave Eugene
and go home to spend time with friends and family. However, this is also a time
when many thieves take advantage of student absences to burglarize empty homes.
By following these tips you can help to keep your home and possessions safe
during this time!
·
Ask your neighbors to keep an eye on your house
for suspicious activity.
·
Stop newspapers and other mail, or ask a
neighbor to collect and hold these items from your home. Otherwise these items
will pile up outside, making it appear vacant.
·
Invite a friend or family member to park their
car in your driveway.
·
Consider getting timers to put on some of the
lights in your house; having lights go on/off periodically helps make your home
appear occupied.
·
Do not leave valuables in areas that are visible
through windows. Keep them out of sight.
·
Take valuables (i.e. laptops, iPods, jewelry,
gaming systems, cash) with you over break.
·
Lock doors and windows. Also use deadbolts or
put dowels in your sliding-glass doors and windows.
