Thinking
about housing for next year? Making plans to sign a lease with your future
roommates? Here are some important things to consider before signing a lease:
1.
With all your potential roommates, review
the property thoroughly. Check important components including: water pressure,
plumbing, appliances, closet space, light fixtures, cupboards, doors, windows
and the surrounding neighborhood.
2.
Ask your property manager questions up
front, such as:
– When
is rent due? Is there a grace period?
– What,
if any, utilities are included?
– What
are the lease terms?
– Is
parking provided? If so, where and how many spots are provided? Are permits required? Where can visitors
park?
– Are
pets allowed? If so, are there extra costs associated (e.g. deposit, additional
rent required)?
– Is
it possible to sublease? What is the process for this (i.e. does landlord need
to approve sublease)?
