DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE- SAVE A LIFE

December is National Impaired Driving Prevention Month. One person in America dies every 51 minutes from intoxicated driving.

Driving while impaired results in devastating consequences, such as heavy fines, license suspension, jail time, criminal record, and loss of life. Driving impairments can be caused by alcohol, prescription drugs, and/or an array of illegal drugs. Someone over the age of 21 can receive a Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants charge at a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of .08%. Someone under the age of 21 will be charged for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants at any BAC above .00%.

  DUII  First Offense Repercussions

1. Someone given a DUII can spend anywhere from one day to a year in jail. If a person or property is harmed, this amount of time will increase.

2.  Initial fines can be up to $2,000. This does not include the costs of an ignition interlock device or DUII classes that may be required by the court.

3. Your driver's license could be suspended for up to a year for the first offense.

How To Avoid Driving Under the Influence

1. Call Safe Ride! You've already paid for it through your tuition, so why not use it? Call 541-346-RIDE to reserve a ride.

2.  Plan ahead. Find a willing sober driver. Have a taxi or Safe Ride programmed into your phone. Make plans to stay with a trusted friend.

3. Remember that drinking water, waiting a couple hours, and eating simply isn't enough! Your driving is likely still affected by alcohol and/or other drugs, even if you feel "fine".

4. Leave your car at home if you plan on drinking. Take the bus, a taxi, Safe Ride, or get a ride with a friend instead. Taking your vehicle will only tempt you, especially when your judgement is impaired.

6. Remember that buzzed driving still ruins lives.
