WHILE YOU'RE AWAY

Many areas around campus go dark during Thanksgiving and Winter break. This is often a prime time for thieves.  There are several preventative measures students can take to avoid being a victim of a break-in.

1. Neighbors
If you live near permanent residents and home-owners, alert a trusted neighbor that you are leaving. This allows them to watch your home for suspicious behavior. If you live in student housing, check with your housing management to see if they check on the facility more often during the holidays.

2. Vehicles
If you are not taking your vehicle with you during winter break, make sure to remove items from view on the dashboard, the seats, or the floor boards. Having anything visible can incentivize a thieve to break in. Remove all valuables from your glove box and trunk. If you are able, attempt to park the car in a populated, well-lit area.

3. Bikes
Bring your bike inside. Bike theft is the most common during breaks.

 4. Your Home
Before you leave, double check that all windows and doors are locked and secure.
Close all blinds and curtains. If a window does not have blinds or curtains, use a sheet.
Use a radio,  noise-activated device, or lamp to make it appear as though you are home.
Never leave valuables out in the open when you are not home- put away electronics, important documents, expensive items, etc.
Remove extra keys from beneath mats or keys hidden outside.

5. Eugene Police Department Vulnerability Checks
The Eugene Police Department offers home walk-throughs to check for vulnerabilities that may lead to a break-in. You can schedule a walk-through with a police officer by contacting the Eugene Police Department non-emergency line at (541) 682-5111.

6. Inventory
Before you leave, create a home inventory checklist of all valuable items. Once you return from your break, make sure all items are still there.

IF A THEFT HAPPENS

1. If you notice that your home was broken in to, vacate your home. Go to a neighbor or friend to call the police. The burglar could still be in your home or area.

2. Contact the Eugene Police Department immediately at (541) 682-5111 to file a report
and have them check the area for the burglar.

Most importantly: Remember to have a fun and safe break! Go Ducks!
